How to measure so the number is right
- Measure the inside of the forms, not the outside of the lumber.
- Thickness is in inches. A 4-inch slab is 0.33 feet; the calculator does that conversion for you.
- Slabs on grade are rarely a perfect 4 inches. Uneven subgrade, low spots and spillage are why we add 5–10%.
- For footings, measure the total trench length and use the true width and depth of the dig, not the plan dimension.
- For post holes, use the auger diameter. Concrete fills the hole around the post; if the posts are large, subtract their volume or just keep the allowance.
- Round up to the next quarter yard. Running short in the middle of a pour costs more than a little extra concrete.

Bags or delivered concrete?
An 80-lb bag yields about 0.6 cubic feet, so a 10 × 10 pad at 4 inches (33 cubic feet) is roughly 56 bags, mixed one at a time. Above about half a yard, delivered concrete is usually faster, more consistent and often cheaper once you count the bags, the mixer rental and the hours. Because we mix on site and meter the discharge, there is no full-truck minimum and no leftover to dispose of.
